What is Mental Toughness and Why is it Necessary?

For the past years, I had this chance to coach and work with a whole heap of players and one thing that I can really share to you without any reservations is that all of the best players were all mentally tough. It is definitely a difficult concept to explicate until you see it yourself, on the other hand, it is obvious when you see a player who has it. And to make my point clearer, not all of the famous and prominent athletes are mentally tough. And not all of the players in a league are mentally tough and there are even a whole heap of players who were not able to enter any huge leagues and are mentally tough. It is not all about the ability of the player, I was able to work with a great deal of remarkable athletes who did not have any idea about being mentally tough and would just discover it once they are placed under great stress or pressure. They can execute so well if there is nothing on the line, on the other hand, if the game is pretty much equal, they have a great tendency to fail.

But then again, I have also witnessed a whole heap of players who only possess average skills, on the other hand, are incredibly mentally tough and were able to perform in ways that not a single person thought they could do. A great defensive, a key blunt, a clutch hit play that halt a rally, the mentally tough players were able to do a great job. In fact, the bigger the pressure that is placed on these mentally tough players, then the better they tend to perform during competitions.

One thing that I was able to realize with experience is that mentally toughness is not something that is embedded on the genes of a certain individual, on the other hand, it is something that you develop as time goes on and exposure to various adverse conditions. Keep in mind that preparation for mental toughness would start at a young age. Without question, parents definitely have a critical role to play in the start of the process to train for mental toughness, but then again, they will be requiring some hand as time goes on. Having a disciplined education system that has high expectations as well as great classroom rules together with fair but tough coaches or mentors who has positive mindsets is vital to developing a child in the mental aspect whether they are an athlete or not.

And this is one of the many reasons why it is crucial for all the kids to be involved in a balanced and organized extracurricular activities at their young age.
